2009 Convention Highlights
As many of you know the beginning of April hosted our 31st annual convention, “BrainStorm!”. The convention was very well attended by advocates, organizations, and members from every region of Texas. CTD took a diverse group of professionals, consumers/family members and young, recently disabled veterans to the steps of the Capitol to rally for disability rights. We extend our special thanks to this year’s partner The Brain Injury Association of Texas and all of our sponsors, exhibitors, advertisers and speakers. Below are highlights from BrainStorm!
Political Speakers
-
Rep. Bryan Hughes spoke Sunday evening along with Rep. Eddie Lucio III at the convention opening and legislative training session. Rep. Hughes delivered a passionate speech about the right of families to make choices concerning end of life issues. He strongly supported increasing the ability of families to be included in such choices and cited his work on the "Don't pull the plug bill" in Texas’ 81st Legislative session to allow more time for decisions to be made.
-
Rep. Lucio III shared his thoughts about current issues affecting people with disabilities in the State of Texas. He commented on his work in this legislative session to bring HUB (Historically Underutilized Business) status to business owners with disabilities, the importance of a Medicaid Buy-In program for parents of children with disabilities and mandating that newly built parks be accessible.
-
Both legislators did a wonderful job giving advice about effective advocacy methods.
-
During our Sunday reception remarks were made by Rep. Eddie Rodriguez. He spoke about his bills on transition services for youth with disabilities and motor vehicle taxes on modified vehicles.
Capitol Rally and Press Conference
- Monday morning CTD held our biennial disability rally at the steps of the State Capitol building and legislative visits. Speeches were delivered by Rep. Elliott Naishtat and Rep. Abel Herrero. Both representatives commented on important issues and methods for advocacy during legislative meetings.
Other Convention Highlights
-
Gold-medal winning paralympian and star of the documentary film “Murderball”, Mark Zupan, delivered his inspirational message of strength and endurance. He wowed the crowd of 300 during the awards luncheon with stories of traveling the world, going to the Oscars and competing in two Paralympic Games.
-
More than 25 continuing education courses were offered by the Brain Injury Association of Texas and 2 continuing education courses offered by CTD. The courses offered by CTD are titled Effective Interactions with People with Disabilities and Consumer Directed Services. The effective interactions course is an experiential workshop used to teach people about common issues confronted when interacting with people with disabilities. The Consumer Directed Services course explained the ins and outs of a new community-based service delivery model. Contact CTD if you would like these CEU courses given to your group.
Success with the CTD ADAPT FUNRUN
CTD would like to thank everybody who sponsored William in the ADAPT FUNRUN for disability rights last Saturday. Due to the continued support of advocates across the state we were able to raise over $1,500.00 dollars. CTD would like to give a special thanks to everybody who helped us achieve this goal.
Thank you.
