CTD Helps Break Through Voting Barriers

    2008 HAVA Seminars Begin

July kicked off a run of more than ten Help America Vote Act seminars being conducted by CTD. During the next few months, CTD will travel across our state to help Texans with disabilities understand their rights as voters.

The seminars include useful information about polling place accessibility, important dates in the upcoming general election, registration and voters’ rights. Hands-on demonstrations of voting machines are included at the seminar.

In 2002 the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) mandated guidelines to improve accessibility at polling places in the U.S. Advocacy Inc. is working with CTD to help spread the word about the process of voting and how easy it has become.

CTD recently held a booth at the San Antonio Independent Living Services ADA celebration with outstanding success; “People were able to get their hands on a voting machine; this gave them a chance to gain confidence and get past intimidation often associated with voting,” said CTD staff member Nathaniel Klugman.
